October’s Luncheon Meeting
NSAE Vice President John Bonaiuto, CAE has arranged for speaker Scott Cushman, Assistant Director of Public Relations for Union College to address the use of digital vehicles such as Facebook to market and create an image. The digital minefield for personnel issues will be touched on - something Human Relations (HR) individuals should be looking at for policy development for their organizations.

We had a winner for each of the drawings at the September meeting. Winners of the regular monthly drawing and of the full-membership drawing were Kay Telford and Cheryl Stubbendieck. Therefore, the full-membership drawing starts again at $50 at the October meeting.

Age Discrimination in the Workplace from ASAE CareerHQ.org

It seems fair—and fairly obvious—that you should be hired because of your abilities, not your age. Yet along with older Americans, who are considered traditional targets of age bias, a growing populace from Generations X and Y feel they are being discriminated against because of their youth.

As the U.S. economy sours and unemployment rates rise (from 5.7 percent to 6.1 percent in August), a greater number of Americans are competing for fewer jobs. This group spans generational lines as more Americans delay retirement because of the economic downturn. Older employees may be stereotyped as resistant to change while the younger generations are thought of as slackers.

Here are some tips to protect you from age discrimination, whether you're job hunting or currently employed:

  • Stay on top of your field's necessary skills and the latest technologies commonly being used.
  • If you have been in the workforce for many years, don't list every single job on your resume.
  • Foster relationships with your manager and colleagues to create a supportive environment.
  • Research before you act. Know both the federal and state laws.
  • If you feel you have been discriminated against, journal every instance that may be interpreted as ageism. Save all email communications.
